Contact/about

Evy Cosemans ( born in Ghent, 1970) studied cinema at the HRITCS, Brussels. She also obtained a bachelor's degree in journalism. She currently lives in Belgium were she works as a videographer for a governmental agency ( Commissariat general for Refugees and Stateless) in Brussels.

In the 1990s, she started travelling to India, Pakistan, Myanmar, USA, Canada and Colombia, among others.

In 1994, she landed in Colombia for the first time, where she lost her heart. Colombia was still facing enormous problems at the time. There was a lot of drug violence and guerrilla warfare.  It was a huge adventure full of magic in a country that was hardly travelled at that time and where the openness of the people was phenomenal to her.

She would go back several times. First alone and later with her two young daughters.

When she went, she would usually make a stop in Muzo. Not to buy emeralds but to capture the poverty in a region where the ground is so rich.  Whenever she was in Colombia, she would return to MUZO to record the story of the poor people.

camera.

Evy did not study photography but her passion for cinema, made that she has an eye for images.

She makes contact with people very easily.

Evy: 'I try to capture the unusual. I make photographs first of all for myself, capturing those moments and scenes that move me emotionally or strike me bizarre. Often calling attention to things that other people overlook. Expressing my interpretation of the world around me.'

EVY COSEMANS effortlessly captures nature, man, the relationship between man and nature , in different cultural and geographical contexts. Her photo's feel like poetry. Her approach is one of warmth and humbleness towards her subject. It feels like breathing in fresh air.

Exhibitions

Evy exhibited several times with a series of photos that take you to a world of scents and colours, playing children,  dancing monks, esmerald seekers and fascinating landscapes.

An inspiring collection of photographs of strong images taken during travels through Colombia, the USA, India but also in her own habitat. For her exhibitions she works together with  sound artist and  designer Koen Roggen. (°1964) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dZhIpQQUrE0)

In a distant past, Koen Roggen was active as a DJ on the club circuit. He played at Mirano in Brussels, Café d'Anvers in Antwerp and FAZ in Athens, among others. Today, he works as a sound artist, sound designer and electronic musician.

He recently played a wayward electronic version of Terry Rilley IN C at the Concertgebouw in Bruges earlier this year.

Especially for this exhibition, he created a very surprising soundscape.
